ASK DANNY!
Ask An English Question
to a Real American Guy!

ASK DANNY!Danny is an American and he's the editor of Xianzai's Learn English email newsletters! Each week you can ask him an English-language grammar, sentence, or cultural question. Each week he will pick one question from a reader and answer it here!

THIS WEEK'S QUESTION COMES FROM SCM.

Question: hi ,DANNY,What does the phrase "hardhead" mean?

DANNY SAYS: Hello SCM! You ask such interesting questions, so I know you are not a hard head!

When we call someone a "hardhead" we can mean two different things:
1) They are very dumb and stupid.
2) They are very stubborn.

If we use it as a noun, we say "hardhead", but when we say someone is "hardheaded", it becomes an adjective.

So, if I thought someone was stupid, I could call them a "hardhead". This is not so nice though. Also, if your boss is stubborn, you can say, "My boss is so hardheaded and won't give my salary a raise!"

Wooohooo! Ask me more questions! I love English!

Family Affair
Sly & The Family Stone

It's a family affair, it's a family affair
It's a family affair, it's a family affair
One child grows up to be somebody that just loves to learn
And another child grows up to be somebody you'd just love to burn
Mom loves the both of them
You see it's in the blood
Both kids are good to Mom
"Blood's thicker than mud"
It's a family affair, it's a family affair
Newlywed a year ago
But you're still checking each other out
Nobody wants to blow
Nobody wants to be left out
You can't leave, 'cause your heart is there
But you can't stay, 'cause you been somewhere else!
You can't cry, 'cause you'll look broke down
But you're cryin' anyway 'cause you're all broke down!
It's a family affair It's a family affair
