*Position: Political Officer (Bilateral Relations) - position equivalent to Second Secretary *Main Purpose of Job: The successful candidate will work in the Embassy's political section with a team handling bilateral relations between the UK and China. He or she will have responsibility for arranging high-level visits between the two countries, liasing with Departments across Whitehall, Chinese Ministries and British Consulates-General. He or she will be expected to work closely with other members of the team, and handle other policy issues as appropriate, for example, working to strengthen co-operation between British and Chinese police and immigration authorities. He or she will also have both personnel and budget management responsibilities. This is an important and influential job in a busy section, and would suit a well-motivated person with an interest in politics and a hands-on approach to solving problems. The role demands sound political judgement, good attention to detail, and the ability to meet deadlines. It also requires the ability to solve problems under significant time pressures and involves working closely with senior Embassy staff and VIP visitors. These responsibilities may alter if the needs of the Embassy change, or if the successful candidate does not obtain the required security clearance. *Requirements: Excellent organisational skills; Excellent written and verbal communication skills; Computer literacy *Desirable Skills and Qualifications: University Degree; Ability to speak and read Chinese; Familiarity with the workings of the British and Chinese Governments. *Position: Project Officer for the Science and Technology Section, Beijing(Open to Chinese and Foreign Nationals) *Job Description: It is envisaged that the Project Officer will be a bright and pro-active person in their early career, able to turn their hand to a variety of tasks, including organisational work in the preparation of visits and events, liaison with Chinese and UK institutions, occasional tasks researching information in response to requests, and writing letters and dealing with emails and telephone enquiries. The person will work to the Senior Project Officer, and will report to the Counsellor Science and Technology. The successful candidate should possess the following skills: A high level of spoken and written English, Chinese preferable; A diplomatic, tactful manner when dealing with contacts, clients and colleagues; At least two years work experience, preferably with a foreign firm or Embassy; A high level of motivation, and demonstrated ability to be a self-starter; Some background in science or technology would be desirable. The person will be part of a team of five staff at the Embassy in Beijing, led by the Counsellor, Dr.Robin Porter, and part of a network of eleven FCO staff nationally throughout China. The tasks of the Network as a whole include: monitoring, reporting on and influencing science policy; encouraging scientific and technical collaboration; promoting UK science and technology achievements; and communicating developments in Chinese S and T to clients in the UK.
